Concrete Grinding

Diamond grinding is a concrete pavement restoration technique that corrects irregularities such as minor pits and divots, faulting and roughness on concrete pavements. This is achieved by using diamond bits to grind the surface. This also leaves a very smooth profile-ideal for thin-mil coating or sealer applications. Diamond grinding also profiles the concrete and removes contaminants from the surface.

Some of the advantages of a diamond ground pavement include:

• Provides a smooth surface that is often as good or better than a new pavement

• Enhances surface texture and friction, and there is no evidence of deleterious effects

• These improvements reduce the potential for small-vehicle hydroplaning

• Does not significantly affect fatigue life of a pavement

• Does not affect material durability unless the coarse aggregate is a soft stone subject to polishing

• May be applied only where is needed, however, spot grinding is not usually recommended

• Restoring smoothness to faulted or curled concrete highways improves skid resistance

• Level doorway entrances

• Smooth driveway approaches

Shot blasting

Suitable for large and small areas. shot blasting is a resurfacing process used to remove debris and irregularities from concrete, metal, and other industrial surfaces. While similar to the sand blasting process, shot blasting is different in both execution and effectiveness.

The shot blasting process utilizes a centrifugal blast wheel that shoots media, like steel shot, onto a surface at high velocity. This knocks the surface free of debris and other material. The shot media, which varies from steel shot to cut wire to nut shells, loads into a hopper that feeds the blast wheel. The media can “blast” off almost anything, from rust to epoxy.

While shot blasting is done to clean surfaces, it’s also used to prepare them. Shot blasting a floor or other surface before painting it or coating it is an effective and efficient way to literally smooth out those processes.

Benefits of Shot Blasting Concrete

  1. Efficient Surface Preparation: Shot blasting is incredibly efficient in preparing concrete surfaces for various treatments like epoxy coatings, polishing, or overlays. It removes dirt, coatings, mastics, and other contaminants, ensuring a clean and ready-to-adhere surface.

  2. Enhanced Adhesion: By roughening the surface, shot blasting creates a superior profile for coatings and overlays to adhere to, resulting in a more durable and long-lasting finish.

  3. Dust-Free Process: Shot blasting is a dust-free process, making it environmentally friendly and safe for both indoor and outdoor applications. This is especially important for projects where dust and debris need to be minimized.

  4. Cost-Effective Solution: Compared to traditional methods like grinding or scarifying, shot blasting is often more cost-effective due to its efficiency and speed. It saves time and labor costs while delivering exceptional results.

  5. Minimal Disruption: Shot blasting is a relatively quiet process, causing minimal disruption to surrounding areas. This makes it ideal for use in busy environments such as warehouses, factories, and retail spaces.

  6. Long-Term Durability: The surface profile created by shot blasting ensures long-term durability of the concrete flooring, reducing the need for frequent repairs or maintenance.

  7. Versatile Applications: Shot blasting can be used on a variety of concrete surfaces, including industrial floors, parking lots, sidewalks, and more. Its versatility makes it a go-to solution for many different projects.

Polish Concrete Restoration

Polished concrete is concrete that has been treated with a chemical densifier and ground with progressively finer grinding tools. The grinding tools are usually progressive grits of diamond grinding cup wheels and diamond polishing pads. Typically, concrete is not considered polished before 400 grit, and it is normally finished to either the 800, 1500, or 3000 grit level. Stains and dyes are often applied to enhance polished concrete as well as other options such as scoring, creating radial lines, grids, bands, borders, and other designs.

Concrete polishing is the process of utilizing diamond grinding equipment, liquid chemical densifiers, and expert grinding techniques. This process is applied to the original concrete surface, where a series of metal and resin bond diamond grinding steps remove all scratches while achieving a permanent, glossy shine. Polished concrete floors can be measured in different shine levels (Low, Medium, Semi, High) and are intended to match the level of shine that best suits the desired use. Once completed, the result is a beautiful, durable, mirror-like, gloss-coated shine. The process can be applied to new or old concrete for any commercial, retail, or industrial facility.

Benefits of Restoring Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is considered a good sustainable design flooring option because it makes use of the materials already present. Most modern buildings are built on a concrete slab; polishing the exposed concrete eliminates the energy and material consumed by applying a floor covering. It is something to consider when building or modernizing towards a more green solution.

Polished concrete floors are low-maintenance, as they are more durable and easier to clean than many flooring options. Its relatively high coefficient of friction can make it non-slippery. Polished concrete reduces dust mite and allergen problems, and does not support mould growth. Anecdotal evidence suggests highly reflective polished concrete reduces lighting needs and improves natural lighting, but as yet there has not been a study to confirm this. Polished concrete flooring is hard wearing and will not chip or dent like softer surfaces such as timber. Mopping with warm soapy water once a week is the only maintenance required. A concrete floor that has been hardened and polished will have an extremely long life expectancy compared to other flooring. Polished concrete floor that has been properly maintained may give 100+ years of service.
